Things to Know Before Submitting a CAD Model
Before submitting your CAD model for 3D printing, please review the following guidelines to ensure a smooth process and the best possible results.
1. Not All Files Are Printable
Submitting an STL or STEP file does not guarantee that it can be printed. Each model will be reviewed for printability, and we will notify you if adjustments are needed. Common issues that may prevent printing include:
Floating or unconnected parts – Components must be properly connected to avoid separate, unintended pieces.
Unsupported overhangs – Models with excessive overhangs may require additional supports or design modifications.
Wall thickness – Thin walls may not print properly and could require reinforcement.
File errors – Corrupt or incomplete files can cause printing failures.
If modifications are necessary, we will provide feedback, but you may need to adjust your design before proceeding.
2. Selecting the Right Filament
We ask for your preferred filament type in the request form to help determine pricing and estimated print time. The choice of filament impacts:
Durability – Some filaments, like PLA, are great for prototypes, while PETG or ABS offer more strength.
Flexibility – TPU or other flexible filaments are required for soft, bendable parts.
Heat and environmental resistance – Certain materials withstand higher temperatures or outdoor conditions better than others.
If you are unsure which filament to choose, we can recommend one based on your project’s needs.
3. Availability of Filament Types and Colors
We do not keep all filament types and colors in stock. If you require a specific filament, you must submit your request with enough lead time for us to order it. Additional considerations include:
Ordering timeline – Specialty filaments may take extra time to source.
Additional costs – The cost of the requested filament will be factored into the final price.
Providing your own filament – If you have a specific material preference, you may supply your own filament, provided it is compatible with our printers.
4. Print Job Feasibility and Approval
We reserve the right to decline a print job based on feasibility or other factors, such as:
Size limitations – If your model exceeds our printer's build volume, adjustments will be required.
Structural concerns – Designs that are unlikely to succeed due to technical constraints may be rejected.
Time and resource constraints – Large or complex prints that exceed reasonable print time limits may not be accepted.
If your model is declined, we will provide guidance on potential adjustments or alternative solutions.
By understanding these guidelines, you can help streamline the 3D printing process and improve the chances of a successful print. If you have any questions before submitting your request, feel free to reach out!
